Before the Sino-Japanese war, a pair of young lovers, Zhu Lan and Xu Jianbai face objection from Xu's parents, who want him to marry his cousin Qiuming instead. Frustrated, Xu goes to study in the north where he meets Yanan. War breaks out, Yanan and Xu joins the army. Lan joins the Nursing
Corps and runs into the seriously wounded Xu. Qiuming joins a travelling troupe as a singer to entertain the soldiers. After the war, Lan dies of illness, Yanan has lost a leg and Qiuming becomes a nun. Ten years of conflict and turmoil has wrought great change and Xu comes to realise that only
true love remains as constant as the sun, moon and star.

THE CRISIS

During the Second World War, Tao Shucheng, director of an automobile repair plant and his staff are trapped behind enemy lines. In order to prevent the Japanese troops from using their gasoline, they hide it in a mountain cave. When the gasoline is eventually discovered, the Chinese decide to blow up the cave as they are unwilling to see it fall into enemy hands. The Japanese demand the voluntary surrender of the offenders or all will be executed. All the Chinese courageously step forward to take the blame. Deeply touched by their courage and spirit of self-sacrifice, the
Japanese set them free.

THE LONGEST NIGHT

Amidst the Sino-Japanese war, a series of misunderstandings led a Japanese army photographer to be mistaken for the long lost son of a Chinese peasant farmer. The daughter-in-law realises the mistake, but is unwilling to hurt the old folks. Though some subtle affection has been developing
between the two of them, they are fully aware that they are on opposite sides of the war. The one night that they spend together under the same roof seems to be the longest night ever.
